Snoring Chin Strap Devices

A snoring chin strap is a device that you wear while you sleep that helps you keep your mouth closed. By keeping your mouth closed you are also keeping your jaw in the forward position and stabilizing your tongue. This helps keep your airway open.

When we go to sleep (specifically in the REM Sleep cycle) all of the muscles and tissues in our throat tend to soften up and push against each other. As we breathe, the air causes vibration. This vibration is known as snoring.

If you are someone who has been diagnosed with sleep apnea medical professionals recommend that you use a chin strap in conjunction with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine or CPAP for short. A CPAP machine helps push air through your throat via a mask. This pressure helps keep your airway open.

When to NOT use a chin straps

People commonly snore either through their mouth or through they nose. Its very important to note that these chin straps will not be very effective at all if you tend snore through your nose.

If you need some help identifying which kind of snorer you are, have your partner listen while you snore. The easiest way to know which of the 2 is by having see if you snore with your mouth closed.

You also should NOT use one of these if you happen to have any kind of nasal blockage. In specific the kind you get when you have an allergic condition or nasal infection like sinuses.

This can be very dangerous. While you’re asleep at night, your body sometimes takes in air through your mouth to compensate for the low oxygen intake of your nose.

If you have sleep apnea, using a chinstrap can actually make it worse. Since your mouth will be closed you will only be able to take in oxygen through your mouth. This will only contribute to the already low oxygen caused by your case of sleep apnea.
